/PRNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, Georgia's academic, civic, economic, and government leaders began a long-awaited conversation about the future of our state. The Macon State College Conference Center played host to the 2010 GeorgiaForward Forum. Over 200 stakeholders, representing every corner of the state, convened at the Conference Center to discuss the most pressing challenges facing Georgians today, including the economy, water equity, education, and transportation.
Following the theme "Together, improving the state of our state," the day-long forum attendees were welcomed by Macon State University President Dr. David Bell and the mayor of Macon, Robert Reichert. An original short video entitled "Who We Are: What Does it Mean to Live in Georgia," started the morning session with a thought-provoking look at the current situation of Georgians, from Rome to Savannah, and everywhere in between.
"I firmly believe that this forum represents a watershed moment in Georgia's history," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver, of Augusta, Georgia. "Though the process won't be easy and will require a long term commitment on behalf of all involved, I believe the forum gave a brief glimpse of a very bright future for Georgia."
Dr. Harold Hodgkinson, the Director of The Center for Demographic Policy, led an in-depth discussion about the state's ever evolving demographic layout, including the social, economic and political implications that Georgians will face by the year 2030. Anita-Brown Graham, Director of the Institute for Emerging Issues, a public policy think-and-do tank that tackles issues facing North Carolina's future growth and prosperity, spoke to the possibilities of what a similar organization could accomplish in Georgia.
"GeorgiaForward is about creating and maintaining an on-going dialogue about the issues that are affecting Georgians," says A.J. Robinson, President of Central Atlanta Progress, the organization that started the effort that is now GeorgiaForward. "Every county in the state of Georgia is unique in its own right; however, by taking a unified look at our state's issues we stand to improve the quality of our state's economy and infrastructure for future generations."
A highly anticipated question and answer session with Georgia's 2010 gubernatorial candidates kicked off the afternoon program with both candidates Deal & Barnes phoning in to talk about their visions for the state. Attendees spent the afternoon participating in four problem-solving interactive sessions: Georgia's new transportation bill, the economy, the Tri-State Water Wars, as well as education's role in economic development, were the focal points of each session.
"Our goal for the inaugural GeorgiaForward Forum was to open the lines of communication between Georgia's stakeholders and citizens, across regional lines," says event organizer Amir Farokhi. Georgia Baptist College of Nursing to Host Conference on End-of-Life Care
Mercer University’s Georgia Baptist College of Nursing will host a research conference on end-of-life care Friday, March 26, in the Trustees Dining Room on the University’s Atlanta campus. The conference, titled “Perspectives and Reflections from the Gloaming of Life: Palliative Care and End-of-Life Challenges,” is open to all members of the nursing, theology, pharmacy and medical professions. In addition, nurses who attend may receive 4.5 contact hours on palliative care from the Georgia Nurses Association.
“As more of our health care is provided outside of hospitals, the care of patients with life-limiting illness is increasingly provided in the community by families and informal caregivers,” said Dr. Janet Timms, professor of nursing and one of the conference’s organizers. “There is no right way to live or die as a result of these life-limiting diseases. Each disease presents its own set of challenges for patients and for their caregivers. The conference will provide updated knowledge about palliative care for health professionals, caregivers and individuals facing life-limiting illnesses and equip health professionals and informal caregivers to provide high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care.”
The Rev. Dr. Julie Pennington-Russell, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Decatur and a Mercer Trustee, will be speak at the opening session. Dr. Pennington-Russell’s presentation is titled “Spiritual Dimensions/Care of Those in the Final Stages of Life.”
The conference is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and consists of five sessions in addition to Pennington-Russell’s opening presentation. The morning sessions include: Dr. Robyn Mowery, assistant professor of family therapy in Mercer’s School of Medicine, presenting “Grieving with Hope: Anticipatory Loss through Bereavement” and Dr. Susan S. Gunby, professor of nursing, presenting ‘“Being There’ and ‘Being Here’ During the Phases of Suffering.”
The three afternoon sessions include: Dawn Keller, staff nurse in a cardiovascular intensive care unit for Wellstar Health Systems, presenting “It's a Roller-Coaster Ride: The Lived Experience of Critical Care Nurses Caring for Patients during the Dying Process;” Dr. Denise Massey, associate professor in the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, presenting “How Pastoral Care Giver can Contribute to Palliative Care;” and Elaine Harris, associate professor of nursing, and Ann Keeley, associate professor of nursing, co-presenting ‘“Can You Help Me Find My Bus Ticket?’ Understanding the Communications of Those Who Are Dying.”

The Appropriate Next Step for the Free People of America: Location and Dates Announced for Modern-Day Continental Congress
GG Note: It's been a long time since a Continental Congress was assembled. Did you know that the US Constitution is the oldest and the shortest still in use today? It took less than 100 days to for the 55 delegates to draft it back in 1787. The US Constitution celebrates its 222th anniversary in September. Have you taken the time to read it?

Schulz, chairman of We The People Foundation for Constitutional Education, Inc and We The People Congress, Inc, today announced plans to move forward with a Continental Congress, a national assembly of citizen-nominated and elected delegates representing The People of the fifty states and D.C., to convene from November 9-22, 2009 at the Pheasant Run Conference Center in St. Charles, Illinois. Attendees will establish a formal historical record that documents, before a worldwide audience, the record of constitutional violations which have taken place over many years, crossing all branches of government and both political parties, and are devastating America. Delegates will collaborate, debate and develop real-world strategies and civic actions to restore Constitutional obedience. Continental Congress 2009 is to defend, not amend the current Constitution.
The decision to organize CC2009 comes on the heels of more than fourteen years of Petitioning the Government for Redress of repeated violations of the Constitution by Schulz and members of We The People Foundation, along with an increasing number of Americans who are demanding constitutional accountability from their government officials. Schulz has established a long and thorough legal record of those violations and government's refusal to respond when obligated to do so under the accountability clause of the 1st Amendment -- the People's CAPSTONE RIGHT.
Volunteer groups in each state are being organized to inform and invite citizen participation leading to the Continental Congress. Delegates to the meeting will be elected from a national pool of American citizens required to have a proven passion for the Constitution. Schulz and others associated with the event hope the seats will be filled with "America's best" as constitutional scholars, authors, activists and champions of popular sovereignty, nominated by their fellow citizens. Preparation is underway for a National Delegate Election to take place on Saturday, October 10, 2009. State coordinators and volunteer teams are in the process of identifying appropriate Voting Centers in all fifty states. The election will be significant in its constitutional validity, using visible and transparent vote counting, an effort planners hope will restore valid electoral procedures for elected office.
